Severe Illusion interview
Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl

Greetings Fredrik could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Severe Illusion? Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where... Severe Illusion was founded in 2000 by tell me more about Severe Illusion?.....
We met in Gothenburg, where we both lived back then, in 2000 and realised that we both where very tired of the EBM scene at that time. After a while we thought that instead of just sitting around, drinking beer and comlaining we might as well do something ourself. We had both played in other projects before, but mostly noise, punk and experimental music. After a year or so we realeased a MCD ourself and started playing live. Later we got contacted by Johan at PAF Records who released our first album.
What and who are some of your influences in music
We both listen to a very broad spectrum of music. From Power elcetronics to 80´s metal and Country. I don´t know how much of all that is recognisable in the music we make with Severe Illusion. When it comes to EBM we are very influenced by the early bands, The Klinik, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb and all those classic acts. To be honest we don´t listen much to music made the last 10 years or so, even if there is lot´s of good bands still making records.

What are your top ten favorite EBM / Industrial Club Songs of all time?
Whoa... That´s impossible to say. There are so many good songs. Is Collapsing New People a EBM song? If it is that´s probably one of the best. Klinik and Nitzer Ebb wouldl probably have a bunch tracks each on a top ten list too.

Tell one secret about Severe Illusion that you have never told to anyone?
We´re very honest and open guys, we don´t keep secrets. And if we had secrets, we wouldn´t tell. :-)

I know the first question is always boring but could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about the stuff that you do?
The band consists of Fredrik Djurfeldt, vocals and electronics, and Ulf Lundblad, electronics, percussion and bass guitar. We have been moving around a lot both of us since we formed the band, but for the first time since 2001 we both live in the same city at the moment, Stockholm. Fredrik works in health care and I´m a journalist. We have both been playing music in one form or the other more or less all our lifes and we are constantly working on different side projects to Severe Illusion.
Could you tell us more about you latest album?
We are currently working on our 4th full length album that we hope shall be done before the winter. Or at least before next year. Judging from how it sounds right now it´s going to be a good album.

What are your views on the current state of this electro scene in Zweden.in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
The electro scene seems to be healthyer than in many years. Here in Sweden there are lots of interesting new bands seeing the light of the day. Untfortunately there are few clubs and labels, but I hope that will pick up too.

you have very nice album`and many many more tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
Most of the time we make the the songs together. One of us starts of on a new track by doing drums and bass. After a while the other takes over, change things that dosent feel good and builds on the track. When we have the ground elements of the song, Fredrik writes the lyrics and put down the vocals. After that we complete the track with leads, samples and all that stuff.

Out of all of your album, ore your up coming album, which album would you say is your favorite album? Why?
Our first album Discipline is Reward Enough was very fun to make and it was great to get a album out, so I have to go with that. But the best album so far I think is the Leopold album.
Tell us a little bit more about Severe Illusion what do you do in your spare time?
On our spare time we play music.

On question about influences and inspirations about Severe Illusion? Are you currently working on or planning any new releases? Are you working on any current or future projects? What is the future for your music?
Right now we are busy recording our next album. But we have also started to make songs for a new project that so far hasn´t got any name. Hopefully we will have a some time soon to work more on that so we will be able to present it to public within a few month.

It has been a pleasure to interview you on your musical activity,Well, any last words to your ebm-industrial fans?
